IBDP: Extended Essay

Resources to support students as they plan, write, edit, and revise their Extended Essays

What is a Subject-focused Pathway?

Start your Extended Essay with a topic you're genuinely interested in. If your idea fits neatly into one IB subject, choose the subject-focused path. This lets you dive deep and explore your topic using the specific methods and perspectives of that subject.

Key Points for a Strong Essay:

Choose a Subject You Study: It is highly recommended that you write your essay in a subject you are taking for your DP. This gives you the foundation to choose a good topic and build upon your existing knowledge.

Demonstrate Rigour: Your essay must be accurate, detailed, and well-researched. Show that you truly understand the subject and can apply its specific methods to your question.

Use Your Supervisor: Check in regularly with your supervisor to ensure your research is on the right track and meets the high standards of your chosen subject.

Choosing Your Topic
Your topic is the most important part of your EE—it's the foundation for your entire project. Start by "taking your idea for a walk" to see how it could work as a focused essay.

If you already have a general area of interest, answer these three questions to get started.

1. What aspect or issue within this broad topic area really interests me?

2. Why is a subject-focused approach appropriate for my topic?

3. How can I challenge myself and expand my thinking in this subject area?
