ES: G4 Earth Changes

Enduring Understanding

People continually respond and adapt to Earth's changing processes

Essential Questions

  • Why does the Earth look the way it does?
  • Why does the Earth's surface and its landforms continue to change?
  • How do humans respond and adapt to Earth's changes?

Earth's Landforms

Are you ready for a hike? In this BrainPOP movie, Tim and Moby will give you an in-depth look at four major types of mountains here on Earth. You’ll discover real-world examples of these four types, and find out how pressure deep within in the earth’s crust can warp and crack the rock on the surface. You’ll learn about tectonic plates, the huge slabs of rock that form the surface of the earth, and how they form mountains when they pull apart, push together, or move upward. Finally, you’ll hear about the undersea mountain range that surrounds the entire earth, and learn how layers of molten magma can form volcanoes! Just don’t get too close!

Every river finds its way to the ocean...but it sure can take a while. In this BrainPOP movie, Tim and Moby introduce you to the world’s river systems, explaining how giant rivers start off as tiny rivulets of run-off from rainstorms. You’ll learn how these streams become creeks and eventually rivers, and what uses humans have found for these important bodies of water. You’ll also learn about the differences between young and mature streams, and why it’s safer to kayak down a mature stream than a young one. Watch out for the rapids!
