Ironically, the best way to determine if an assignment is AI-generated is for a human to evaluate it, considering the student’s abilities, previous work, writing style, and how the assignment evolved over time.
Other strategies include the following:
- Look for vague or repetitive language, unusual phrasing, or lack of personal style.
- Check for factual inaccuracies or information that seems off-topic.
- Use AI detection tools like Turnitin to scan for AI-generated content, but don't rely on this data as it can be wildly inaccurate.
- Ask students follow-up questions to gauge understanding.
- Redesign assessments and make instruction AI-proof.
