Food insecurity is the lack of access to enough nutritious food to be active and healthy. Food insecurity is a problem in countries around the world, including the United States, which has the world’s largest economy. Food insecurity is not only correlated with physical health problems, such as malnutrition and type 2 diabetes, but also with mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Millions of people in the United States experience food insecurity each year.

Since ancient times, women have fought as soldiers in combat roles. In more recent history, however, women have been something of a rarity in the military, instead serving as cooks, nurses, and laundresses. During the American Civil War, some women disguised themselves as men to fight in the Union and Confederate armies. It took both world wars of the 20th century for there to be a dramatic increase in the numbers of women in the military.
