Definition

Identity is what makes each of us unique!

It includes things like our names, the color of our skin, and where we’re from. Identity also includes what’s important to us, like being kind or fair, and special family traditions or cultural backgrounds.

The people around us, like our family and friends, and the experiences we have as we grow up also help shape who we are.

In-depth Family Discussion

Reflect: Discuss these questions as a family:

  • In the last 3 months how have you actively learned about other cultures and identities?

Action:

  • As a family, research three holidays that are different to your own.
  • Find three books in the library that are windows to another identity/culture different than your own and read as a family.
NEW - Family Extension Activity

To learn about others and embrace diverse identities, create a "Cultural Exchange" project. Each family member can choose a different identity to research, focusing on various cultural backgrounds, family units, or religions. Together, create a presentation that includes:

  1. Cultural Symbols: Draw or print symbols representing the chosen identity.
  2. Traditional Foods: Share recipes or cook a dish from that culture or religion.
  3. Festivals or Celebrations: Discuss significant events and their meanings.
  4. Family Structures: Explore different family units (e.g., single-parent families, blended families) and how they celebrate their identities.

Encourage open dialogue, asking questions like, "What does this mean to you?" or "How does this shape your identity?"

Share your findings and celebrate the rich diversity within your family and community!
